Professional clothes cleaning is all about providing a service - how to clean and care for clothes without damaging them. What's new is that you now have a choice of the type of cleaning service to use and these choices are cleaner for the environment too!

Despite the name there is nothing dry about dry cleaning. About 98% of dry cleaners in North America soak clothes in a liquid chemical called perchloroethylene, or "perc" for short. "Perc" (also known as tetrachloroethylene) it is considered a hazardous substance and is toxic by Environment Canada. New regulations became law on February 27, 2003 and the compliance will take place over the next two years.

The good news is the fabricare industry is busy developing new techniques and equipment that eliminate toxic solvents.

Busy Bee Cleaners Spall Plaza is the first in the Okanagan to install and operate the alternative solvent using EcoSolv dry-cleaning fluid. The process is a breakthrough technology that cleans better and is environmentally friendly, nontoxic, has no odor and leaves clothes feeling soft. EcoSolv is so gentle on fabrics, it helps garments last longer. The new system won't pollute our air, soil, or water. EcoSolv fluid that is used is 100% biodegradable.

The same model was on show for the first time in the World Clean 03 show held in Las Vegas on August 11th .2003. There are very few similar machines installed in Canada, only one machine installed in Calgary, one in Edmonton and three in Vancouver.
